What is Ad Block Ghost?
A fake Download HD button is not a download. It is a personality test. I failed it at 11pm, clicked it anyway, and three new tabs introduced themselves. One of them wanted to update Chrome. It was not Google.
Ad Block Ghost is the extension I added after that. The Chrome listing was short. Free. 3.38 megabytes. A winking ghost on a shield, which is not how most security products introduce themselves, and which is, in this case, the honest part. I pinned it. The tab sat still. I watched the movie.

How does Ad Block Ghost work?
Add to Chrome. Then pin the ghost. I am going to say this like a parent, because Chrome still hides new icons behind the puzzle-piece menu, and it will still be doing that in 2030. Two clicks. If you skip it, the pause button vanishes into the furniture and you will swear nothing installed. It did. Chrome hid it. Pin it. Then the fun starts.
What Ghost actually does, verified 2026-08-28:
The Friday-night stuff. Click-jackers. New-tab spam. Pop-ups on movie pages. Fake download buttons. Fake virus warnings. The whole carnival. Ghost was built for that tab, and it shows.
The ordinary-web stuff it will also do, cheerfully. Sticky banners. Autoplay junk. Cookie walls that will not die. An element picker for the one leftover that always survives. Daily filter updates. Cosmetics that apply before the page paints, so ads do not flash in, die, and still count as a jump scare.
And YouTube. Off. On purpose. Labeled YouTube Ad Acceleration. Open the ghost, open Settings, flip it. When it is on, it fast-forwards ads instead of knifing the stream. That is a grown-up default. YouTube has been serving “This content isn’t available, try again later” to people whose blockers hard-block ads, a crackdown TechSpot documented that vanished the moment people turned the blocker off. How-To Geek watched the same movie. Ghost refuses to break the player on a fresh install. When you want the ads gone, you flip a switch and it skips them. I like a product that tells you where the landmine is.

What worked well when we tested Ad Block Ghost?
- It is for the tab that ruins Friday. Fake download buttons, streaming pop-ups, cookie walls, an element picker. Ghost shipped this month and already knows the job.
- YouTube-off is a feature. Hard-blocking YouTube is how you get a dead player. Ghost ships the toggle off, then skips ads. TechSpot and How-To Geek both described the “content isn’t available” errors disappearing the moment blockers were disabled. Ghost designed around that fight. Charming, in a technical way.
- It is actually free, and small. 3.38 MiB. No Pro. No account. Updated 2026-08-23.
- Ads do not flash in and then die. Cosmetic filters before paint. The page just looks like a page.

Shouldn’t
- People whose entire complaint is YouTube, and who will never open Settings. Turn the toggle on. One click. Leave it off and youtube.com looks like a default Chrome window, which is the honest install, not a broken one.
- People whose browsing is Gmail, news, and shopping. Those sites serve ordinary display ads. uBlock Origin Lite was built for that web. Ghost is for the other tab. It is not that Ghost fails on Gmail. It is that you would be ignoring the product it actually is.
