For a time Googles old Assistant was reliable. It was good at things like setting timers playing music and answering easy questions.. The new generative AI is different. Its designed to have conversations and do complicated tasks. This new approach is sometimes frustrating of helpful. When you ask a speaker for help you want it to work right away.. Often you just see a spinning light while the system tries to figure out what you want.
Why New AI Doesn’t Work Well in the Living Room
The main problem is that smart speakers are meant to be useful tools. When you walk into a kitchen and ask to turn off the lights you don’t want an explanation. You just want it to happen.. The new generative AI models, like Gemini are designed to think, create and explain things. This is overkill for tasks like turning off lights. It’s like using a powerful tool for a simple job.
Also smart home devices need to be reliable. If a speaker can’t turn on a routine because its trying to understand your request in a way its not doing its job. Many recent reviews of speaker performance say that the current AI prioritizes sounding smart over working efficiently. Google needs to make its old system speedy and its new models intelligent at the time.
The Future of Intelligent Audio
For Google to succeed it needs to create a system that works in two ways. Simple commands should work away either on the device or with a lightweight model. Only complex queries should go to a powerful AI in the cloud. This way users get the best of both worlds: the speed they had before and the new capabilities they want.
New features should also be optional not mandatory. Users who like the speed of voice commands shouldn’t be forced to use a system that always thinks before it acts. The smart home is about making life easier. If the software gets in the way its not doing its job. As some people say, the future of AI in homes is about integration, not constant conversation.
Lastly Google needs to address privacy concerns. Intelligent speakers need more data, which raises questions, about how that data is stored and used. Users need to trust that their speaker can listen and respond in a way that respects their privacy. Until Google balances hardware and software these speakers will feel like they’re waiting for their full potential to be unlocked.
